    Lapiplasty 3D Bunion Correction

    Published on December 6th, 2021

    What is Lapiplasty?

Dr. Gurrera and Dr. Siddiqui have been recently trained on a groundbreaking new bunion procedure known as lapiplasty. This innovative procedure is a surgical procedure that treats bunions effectively and efficiently, so you can be back on your feet in no time.

How Does the Lapiplasty Procedure Work?

Lipoplasty works by targeting the root cause of a bunion, which is a misaligned toe bone. In a traditional bunion surgery, just the bump is cut and the bone is shifted, which targets the problem in a 2D dimension. In lapiplasty, all three dimensions of deformity are addressed, instead of just the actual bunion bump being cut off. This 3D model makes sure that there is no unstable foundation in the foot.

During this type of procedure, the metatarsal bone is corrected in all three dimensions, which naturally removes the bunion bump, and the toe becomes straightened. The joint then fuses with titanium plates, which ensures that the bunion will not return.

What Does Lapiplasty Recovery Look Like?

Typically, patients will be able to walk on, or at least put weight on, the corrected foot within three days of surgery. They will then have a boot for about 4-6 weeks after the procedure so the foot is able to heal correctly. Any intense exercise on that foot should be avoided for about three months. Once the boot is off, regular shoes can be worn.

Some patients may have to take about a week off of work after the procedure to recover, and more time if they have a job that requires standing or any physical exercise.

Once the boot is off and the doctor says that everything has healed correctly, patients can return to any and all normal activities: wearing any shoes they’d like, engaging in sports, and partaking in any sort of physical activity. It typically takes around 4-6 months to fully heal until these regular activities can be resumed. There will most likely be a small scar after the foot heals, but can be managed with the right medical wraps and creams. Besides post-up checkups, no additional follow-ups or treatments should be needed.

Benefits of Lapiplasty Over Traditional Bunion Surgery

There are countless benefits of lapiplasty in comparison to other bunion correction procedures such as a traditional 2D osteotomy, a minimally invasive osteotomy, or a Lapidus fusion. These benefits include:

    • Correction for all 3 dimensions of the bunion
    • No cutting or shifting of bone
    • Actually fixes the unstable joint, which is the root cause of the bunion
    • Can walk again relatively soon in a boot
    • Traditional osteotomy shows sometimes inconsistent results
    • 97% of those who received Lapiplasty kept the same successful 3D correction results over a year after their procedure
    • Anatomy of the foot is restored to what it should be
